Six Tips for Beautiful Plus Size Maternity Photos

As I navigated my fifth pregnancy, a big question I often raised was whether I should have maternity photos taken.  I loved other peoples’ pictures, both straight sized and fat folks, but I often thought "just because their pictures look good don't mean mine will."  I had serious doubts that I would a) like the photos and b) be comfortable having my plus size body the center of attention.  This was particularly challenging as an introvert!

Ultimately I decided to go for the photo shoot as a way to honor my pregnancy, knowing it would be my last.  Here are my top six tips to help you get pictures you love!

1) Research Photographers

I cannot stress this enough!  A photographer who is experienced in taking family photos, for example, isn't necessarily going to rock a maternity session.  Ask photographers if they have any experience photographing plus size expecting parents and ask to see their portfolio if it isn't readily available online.

You may also want to ask for referrals from family, friends and others in any pregnancy groups you may be a member of. You can also search the Fat & Pregnant directory for size inclusive birth photographers in your area!

 2) Gather Your Ideas

Look up examples of other maternity photos you like.  Are their colors or themes you prefer?  Do you want solo pictures, some with your partner or older children?  Do you prefer indoor or outdoor?  Having a bit of both can be nice, too!  Send your ideas to your photographer beforehand so they can prepare and they may have some ideas or suggestions too.  Photographers often know beautiful outdoor spaces you may be unaware of.  Whatever location you decide on, consider how you will feel and if that might translate in your picture.  For example, some people may feel more anxious having photos taken outdoors where others might be, while others don’t mind at all.

3)  Communicate Openly With Your Photographer

Sharing ideas with your photographer is important, but it's also equally important to discuss any concerns you may have and what poses you really want.  Come right out and tell your photographer you are nervous.  Maybe you have never had professional photos taken before.  If you want more of an emphasis on your bump so it looks a certain way, tell them.  Maybe you want less of an emphasis on something else.  These are your pictures and your photo session, so you decide!

I came right out and told my photographer that I get really anxious when pictures are taken and I sweat… a lot during the process.  I even told her I would need time to take breaks to do some slow breathing and freshen up if needed.  She was of course understanding and laying that out on the table made things easier on the day!

4)  Select Your Photo Shoot Clothes

You have envisioned your maternity wear, now it's time to find it!  This is completely individual.  Some people prefer dresses of different styles from flowy to form fitting, lingerie emphasizing their bare bump, swimwear and others may be fully nude.  Do and wear whatever makes you feel the most comfortable and feels the most like you.

5) Be Organised

Having your location and outfit already decided means you will be able to envision your photo session in advance.  You will also be less stressed on the day so you can get ready feeling more calm and confident.

6)  Don't Forget to Have Fun!

Maternity photos are capturing a really special time.  You will of course remember to smile but don't be afraid to laugh too!  Take breaks if you need to, bring some water to stay hydrated and remember to just be you.  You don't need to pretend to be a model or do unnatural poses for the camera.  Oftentimes the best pictures are snapping those organic movements and facial expressions.
